Tonga is located in the very heart of the South Pacific lying east of Fiji and south of Samoa . It is one of the most scenic and unspoiled of the Pacific island nations.

The Kingdom of Tonga is the official name of the islands. Tonga lies south of the equator and is one of the most southerly of the tropical South Pacific islands.

Tonga , before Europeans arrived, was one of the most powerful islands in the region and at times its empire stretched across Samoa , Futuna, Uvea (Wallis), Rotuma, Niue and parts of Fiji . Testimony to these powerful times are evident along the north-eastern coast of Tongatapu where the powerful kings (Tui) resided. This archaeologically rich area offers the largest terraced tombs (langi) in the South Pacific at the present day village of Lapaha (formerly known as Mua) and the hugely impressive trilithon of Ha'amonga 'A Maui, about five miles further along the north point. This trilithon is a massive 12-ton stone archway made from three single limestone slabs. How they got there and what it was used for is uncertain but two of the more creditable theories are a gateway to the Royal Gardens or a shrine for observing the seasons. Other similar but smaller structures can be found within the Kingdom's ancient empire.

Tongan culture and its political spin-off is one of the most complex and traditional in the region. The Tongans once ruled much of Polynesia and since the European invasion during the 18th century, Tonga retained its powerful monarchy. However, Christian religion was quickly adopted and today Tongans are amongst the most stout believers on earth. Sunday is an absolute strict day of rest when only policemen may work to ensure its observance.

The Tui Tonga, the hereditary king of Tonga , rules the Kingdom with absolute power. Tongan culture retains a strong divide between the royal families and the commoners and even today common people must use a special dialect when addressing someone of royal status. Much has been criticized of the system, particularly by folks who have moved abroad to free themselves of the incestuous restrictions in commerce.
