With its excellent scenic beauty and abundant flora and fauna, Seychelles attracts travelers worldwide. This archipelago of 115 islands is home to two U.N.E.S.C.O World Heritage Sites: Aldabra - the world's largest raised coral atoll and Vallée de Mai on Praslin - supposed to be the original site of the Garden of Eden.
Considered as the living natural history museum, Seychelles is a sanctuary for some of the rarest species of flora and fauna. Much of Seychelles 's beauty lies in its natural wildlife. Approximately 40% of the land area in Seychelles has been designated as nature reserves, national parks, and protected areas. Seychelles houses six national marine parks such as St.Anne National Marine Park , which is under the administrative control of Marine Parks Authority.
Seychelles houses a wide variety of indigenous species of birds and animals such as the smallest frog (Sooglossids), the flightless bird of the Indian Ocean and the Giant Land Tortoise. It has a wide variety of fruits, plants, and trees. Besides, over 800 species of magnificent fish, corals and other marine life forms are also found in Seychelles .
About 81 unique species of plant life are found within Seychelles . Most of these unique species of plants are found in the granite islands. " Coco de mer" or double coconut, which produces the largest seed in the world, is one such species that can be found only in Seychelles . Coco de mer grows only on the islands of Praslin (especially in Vallee De Mai-a primeval forest) and Curieuse. Other unique plant species found in Seychelles include Barringtonia, Frangipani, Pawpaw, Bois Meduse, Jellyfish tree, and Wrights Gardenia.
Pitcher plant, the fragrant Vanilla Orchid, avocado, breadfruit, banana, cinnamon, mango, papaya, patchouli, and pineapple are also worth mentioning. Furthermore, several rare species of orchids are scattered in various islands. Many of the endemic plants are confined to the Aldabra Group.
