Lithuania borders on the Baltic Sea in the west, Latvia in the north, Belarus in the east and southeast, Poland in the south, and the Kaliningrad oblast (a Russian exclave; formerly East Prussia ) in the southwest. Vilnius is the capital, largest city, and an important rail and highway center. About 80% of the population is Lithuanian; there are Russian, Polish, Belarusian, Latvian, and Jewish minorities. The major religion is Roman Catholicism and there are small communities of Lutherans and Russian Orthodox. The Lithuanians speak a Baltic language (see Balts), which is the official language; Polish and Russian are also widely spoken. Lithuania was one of the largest and most powerful states in Europe from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries, at which time it merged with Poland . In the late eighteenth century, it was absorbed by Russia . A nationalist movement that grew in strength throughout the nineteenth century finally bore fruit when the Russian empire collapsed during World War I. Capital city of country is Vilnius .

Languages of the country are Lithuanian, Polish, Russian The highest point in Lithuania is Juozapines Hill (294m), near Vilnius . Lithuania 's largest lake is the Druksiai (44.5 sq km), the longest is the Asveja (21.9 km) and     its deepest lake is the Tauragnas (60.5 m). Lithuania was the last country in Europe to be converted to Christianity.

Lithuania is a small plot of land at the Baltic Sea . The whole west fringe of the country (appr. 100 km) is occupied by the amber coastline with marvelous beaches of white sand. Clean waters of Sesupe, Dubysa, Nevezis and Nemunas flow. Sometimes Lithuania is called the Nemunas land due to the great love Lithuanians have to the river Nemunas. For the first time Lithuania was mentioned in 1009 in Qedlinburg annals. The Lithuania as a state emerged in early XIIIth century after the union of the main lands. Mindaugas became the Grand Duke of Lithuania at about 1240. At the end of XIVth - and the beginnning of the XV century Lithuania became one of the most powerful states in the Eastern Europe . Almost for the whole two centuries German crusaders invaded the pagan state, though Lithuania was not conquered. Lithuanians fougth bravely for their state and religion. They built castles which are admired even today for their defensive construction. In 1410 united armies of Great Dutchty of Lithunia and Poland inflicted a severe defeat to the Teutonic Knights in defence of their liberty.
